Join TheHill’s Start-Up Labs

TheHill’s Start-Up Labs programme begins Wednesday 10 June and we’re looking for staff across the NHS who have an idea for new digital technology but don’t know where to start turning the idea into reality.

This 5-week programme has been designed to support staff to take their idea and create a prototype. The programme is conducted through hands-on, in-person workshops held at the John Radcliffe Hospital, combined with at-home tasks. At the end of the programme, you will have an opportunity to demo your prototype, with the most promising solutions offered additional mentoring and support for six months after the programme to continue development of your solution.

The programme is ideal if you:

  • Have an idea or concept for a new digital product or service that would deliver benefit to patients
  • Want to turn this idea into a reality and develop a new digital product or service
  • Want to learn more about becoming an entrepreneur
  • Want to gain new skills and an understanding of digital innovation in healthcare

In 2024, a hand therapist from the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre took part in the Start-up Labs programme and has since gone on to set up his own company and further develop his solution for the benefit of patients and staff, while one participant from the 2025 programme encourages staff to apply:

“Definitely apply. I had no idea where to begin and Start-Up Labs gave me some really clear guidance and loads of support, and the designated time to spend on my idea to develop it properly.”

Applications are now open and will close on Saturday 28 February. Places are limited and the dates for the programme are outlined below. The programme will be delivered in-person at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

  • Wednesday 10 June
  • Thursday 18 June
  • Thursday 25 June
  • Wednesday 1 July
  • Thursday 9 July
